Introducing Motu
Download our most recent strategic plan here.Motu is a leading non-profit economic and public policy research institute. Our researchers carry out long-term, socially beneficial research programmes. Since we formed in September 2000, our objective has been to produce high quality research, promote well-informed and reasoned debate on public policy issues and explore New Zealand solutions for issues affecting New Zealanders.
We are a fully independent organisation and do not advocate an expressed ideology or political position.
Our aim is to enhance the economic research and policy environment in New Zealand through the production of high quality, non-partisan research, by teaching at various universities and institutions, training junior research staff, facilitating networks of researchers, hosting foreign researchers and organising small conferences and dialogue groups. Objective research and analysis are critical foundations for making informed policy decisions and we are committed to the wide dissemination of our work.
Our strength lies in our people. All our principal researchers have PhDs from top international universities, as well as extensive public policy-related work experience. We maintain strong links with a large pool of internationally renowned experts and have professional affiliations with NERO and EDN. These international connections are critical to our success.
Our distinctive contribution to the New Zealand public policy environment comes from our emphasis on sound empirical analysis, which is supported by our expertise in and knowledge of economic theory and institutional design. We choose research areas that build on the interests and expertise of our researchers.
Our research programmes are funded primarily through research grants. We are able to compete nationally and internationally for funding because of the calibre of our principal researchers and the relevance of our research.
We also seek unrestricted funding from individuals, foundations and corporations. We are closely associated with the Motu Research and Education Foundation, a charitable trust established in July 2006 whose support improves our capability to carry out and disseminate additional research projects and to enhance the research environment in New Zealand.
