Dean Hyslop
Senior Research Associate
In addition to his position at Motu, Dean is a researcher at the Department of Labour and Statistics New Zealand, and was until recently a Principal Advisor in the State Sector Performance Group of The Treasury. Before joining The Treasury, he was an Assistant Professor at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and has been a visiting research fellow in the Center for Labor Economics at UC Berkeley, and at the University of Melbourne.
Dean’s research interests are in labour markets and applied econometrics. His recent papers include estimating the dynamic treatment effect of an earnings subsidy to long-term welfare recipients, understanding recent changes in New Zealand’s income distribution, estimating the effect of inflation on nominal wage rigidity, modelling the behaviour of public sector disputants under an arbitration system, and measuring the impact of arbitration provisions on wage levels and is currently working on Linked Employer-Employee Database (LEED) research at Statistics New Zealand.
Dean has a PhD from Princeton University.
