From 11–13 April Motu joined NIDEA in co-hosting a workshop on the economic benefits of immigration and population diversity. From 11–13 April Motu and the University of Waikato’s National Institute of Demographic and Economic Research (NIDEA) co-hosted a workshop on the economic benefits of immigration and population diversity. The diversity workshop saw international and New Zealand researchers and analysts meet to discuss scientific research addressing a range of important empirical, analytical, and policy questions. The workshop was highly successful, with interesting and high-quality work presented in a collegial atmosphere. Abstracts and presentations from the workshop are now available from NIDEA.Motu participants included Senior Fellow Dave Maré, Fellow Isabelle Sin, and Director Howard Fancy. Dave presented work on immigrant segregation in Auckland. Motu Senior Associates John Gibson and Steve Stillman also presented, on scientific mobility and knowledge networks in high emigration countries and on immigrants’ relative educational achievement respectively. Motu Affiliate Jacques Poot chaired the hosting committee and leads the NIDEA project that led to the workshop, while Motu Affiliate Sholeh Maani also presented. Motu is pleased to have supported this workshop, which emphasised evidence-based discussion of an important and enduring policy issue - the economic benefits of immigration and population diversity. These issues remain part of Motu’s ongoing research programmes on labour and population economics. Further information about the workshop and a detailed agenda are now available from NIDEA.

The symposium, held at Te Papa Tongarewa on Wellington’s waterfront, was open to the public, and featured recent policy-relevant work on water quality management in New Zealand. It provided a chance to hear sectoral, NGO, and government perspectives on the issue. There was a particular focus on the potential role for market-based instruments to improve water quality in New Zealand. The symposium was a chance for policy professionals, students, scientists, and interested parties to familiarise themselves with up-to-date research and information around preserving and restoring New Zealand’s water quality. Speakers included researchers from Motu, NIWA, Landcare Research and the Land and Water Forum, farmers, MPs, and representatives from the local and national public sectors.Video of the presentations and panel discussions is now available.More information about the symposium can be found here; the agenda, speaker biographies, and most presentation notes are also available. For further information about the seminar, contact Hugh McDonald. You can also read more about Motu’s Nutrient Trading and Water Quality research programme.

Presented by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand and the New Zealand Econometric Study Group, the award is given each year to a young econometrician presenting at the New Zealand Econometrics Study Group annual meeting. Izi shared the award this year with Ping Yu of the University of Auckland. Izi received the award for presenting on her paper “Book Translations as Idea Flows: The Effects of the Collapse of Communism on the Diffusion of Knowledge”. The paper, which draws on her thesis, used novel data on 800,000 translations in conjunction with difference-in-differences regressions to estimate the various ways the end of Communism in Eastern Europe altered international translation patterns. The results help us to understand how institutions shape the international diffusion of knowledge, a longstanding and important topic.More information about the meeting and the award can be found at the NZESG website.
