Child and Adult Annual Poverty Transitions in New Zealand
Abstract
This paper summarises work in progress examining child and adult poverty in a dynamic way. The project analyses annual movements into and out of poverty of children and adults in New Zealand over the 1997/98, 1998/99 and 1999/00 periods. The annual Income Supplement to the Household Labour Force Survey allows us to track dwellings and people in two consecutive June quarterly reference weeks, and thus allows observation of changes in equivalised household income for children and adults over the period. This project is the first attempt to use the Linked Income Survey for analysis of income dynamics. This project is part of the Ministry of Social Policy’s ongoing research on family dynamics.
