Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Emissions
New Zealand’s emissions notably differ from those of many other countries in that agricultural emissions play a significant part. Consequently, Motu’s work funded by the “Coordination and Cooperation for Effective Climate Policy Design and Implementation” grant has a significant emphasis on mitigating agricultural emissions, both through the ETS but also through a range of other private and public efforts.
Agricultural Emissions Trading
The NZ government plans to include methane and nitrous oxide, both greenhouse gases from pastoral agriculture, horticulture, and arable production, in the New Zealand ETS. Motu’s emissions trading work in New Zealand involves exploring how the ETS can be applied most effectively in New Zealand. You can find out more about agricultural emissions trading at the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. Motu was involved in the MAF Agricultural Technical Advisory Group, whose final report, “Point of Obligation Designs and Allocation Methodologies for Agriculture and the Emissions Trading Scheme”, can be read here.

Agricultural Emissions Dialogue Group
Motu coordinates a dialogue group on the effective control of agricultural emissions. The group is made up of farmers, tangata whenua, and representatives of farm industry groups, NGOs, and government agencies.
